Or maybe I've got this all wrong. Perhaps there are just more drivers now than back then. Or maybe unemployment is up and people are driving around more to get to their interviews. Or maybe the alien infiltration before the takeover of our planet is fueling the increase of people. I think back to the simpler times and...
Oops, gotta go back to work.

Say That Again
Science and Technology Minister Kusmayanto Kadiman said Indonesia received the bulletins 45 minutes before the tsunami hit but did not announce them because they did not want to cause unnecessary alarm.
"If it (the tsunami) did not occur, what would have happened?" he told reporters in Jakarta, noting that there was no effective way to spread a warning without a system of sirens or alarms in place.
Answering reporters' questions as to why no warning was issued on Monday, Vice President Jusuf Kalla claimed there was no need because most people had fled inland after the earthquake, fearing a tsunami.
"After the quake occurred, people ran to the hills ... so in actual fact there was a kind of natural early warning system," he said.
People interviewed in Pangandaran after the devastation said they did not feel any tremors and did not see any people fleeing into the hills before the tsunami hit. These officials need to stand up and admit that they really screwed up.

Pretty Lights In The Sky Again
But this time not from fireworks. A UFO you ask? Well, kind of. It happened to be the remnants of a test by the Missile Defense Agency's Terminal High Altitude Area Defense Weapon System, or THAAD. It is designed to destroy short- and intermediate-range ballistic missiles as they close in on their targets and is a long-range counterpart to the Patriot missile system. Although residents in this area were able to see the results of the successful test in the sky, no one seemed to have had a camera with them at six in the morning. This photo by Tom Tingle was taken near Phoenix. If you have the time, check out Lockheed Martin's product list if you visit the THAAD site. Scary...

Practical Jokers Dream Come True?
TOKYO - People stopping to smell the roses can now take that sweet floral fragrance home with them or even send it to a faraway grandmother thanks to a new gadget in Japan that records and replicates the world's odors.
The new device, developed by scientists at the Tokyo Institute of Technology, analyzes smells through 15 sensors, records the odor's recipe in digital format and then reproduces the scent by mixing 96 chemicals and vaporizing the result.
Creator Takamichi Nakamoto says the technology will have applications in food and fragrance industries where companies want to replicate odors. But it could also be a boon for the digital world, allowing smells can be recorded in one place -- by sensors in a mobile phone, for instance -- and transmitted to appreciative noses halfway around the world.
It could also aid online shoppers by letting people check out perfumes or flowers before they buy.
"The sensitivity of the human nose is very good," Nakamoto said. "But to some extent we can replicate the performance."
Nakamoto says his machine, in the works since 1999, is the most advance of its kind in the world, though a similar project is also underway at Keio University, also in Japan. But so far, the machine is too big to be portable -- it measures about the 1 meter by 3 feet by 2 feet.
Still, the breakthrough follows on the heels of a Japanese smellovision project that synchronized smells to movie scenes. That odoroendeavoreor was undertaken by NTT Communications Corp. and emitted smells from under seats in two movie theaters to accompany parts of the film "The New World," a Hollywood adventure film.
Nakamoto's smell recorder has successfully recreated a range of fruit smells, including oranges, apples, bananas and lemons, but can be reprogrammed to produce almost any odor -- from old fish to gasoline, he said.
Making the 15 sensor chips, which pick up aromas and convert them to a digital formula, was the hardest part, Nakamoto added.
But the unit's large size is also limitation because the 96 odor-forming chemicals are contained in separate glass bottles. A more compact version, which includes only the sensors, can record smells but must be hooked up to the blender to regenerate them."We also want extend the range of smell and then we can think about commercializing the system," Nakamoto said.
Nakamoto's team of 12 scientists have been collaborating with a Japanese perfume company that produces the raw ingredients for fragrances and with electronics companies interested in the sensor chip technology.

This morning, from a cave somewhere in Pakistan, Taliban Minister of Migration, Mohammed Omar, warned the United States that if military action against Iraq continues, Taliban authorities will cut off America's supply of convenience store managers. And if this action does not yield sufficient results, cab drivers will be next, followed by Dell customer service reps.

ATLANTA -- The man who won "Survivor: Thailand" four years ago is charged with battery and cruelty to animals. Officials said Brian Heidik shot a puppy with an arrow. A Georgia county judge has released Heidik on bond. Atlanta TV station WSB-TV reported that Heidik told the judge he thought the dog was a coyote that has been harassing his pets. But a prosecutor said Heidik's wife called authorities at 3 a.m. to say he'd shot a puppy "and planned to shoot another one." Officials said Heidik fled in his car when sheriff's deputies arrived. He was quickly captured. The prosecutor said evidence at the home also supports a charge of battery for family violence. Heidik is a former North Carolina State football player, used-car salesman and part-time actor.

Vital Records
The birth certificate is actually a digitized copy of the certificate of birth that is then printed onto a nice piece of heavy bond, security paper with the county and state seals on it. Illegal to duplicate by the way. The marriage certificate is a copy of the license printed on normal paper and then notarized by hand with the county seal. By my description, you should be able to figure out which of the two costs more. Now, explain to me why they can't just print the certificates on normal paper and manually notarize them? Or, to make more money, use the fancy paper for everything and charge more?
I think this is just another one of those things that makes me think there is a conspiracy.

Yummy
Call me crazy or call me sick but I have had a craving for those little cans of Vienna Sausages for the past week. It had been many, many years since I had those so when I visited the local grocery store the other day I decided to seek a can out. I found a large selection of the sausages ranging from different producers and different flavors. Some were made from beef and others from chicken. After much debate I purchased a can of the Jalapeno flavored sausages. When I returned home I consumed the can and I believe my craving has been satisfied for at least a few years now. Strange, but back when I was little and even today, when I see an opened can of these sausages, sticks of dynamite come to mind.

ALTADENA, Calif. -- A small bear found himself cornered by wildlife officers on a California roof on Monday. The officers were called out after the bear was spotted in an Altadena, Calif., neighborhood. Initially, it was found sitting in a tree. The bear was shot with a tranquilizer. That's when it tried to take to the rooftops to get away. The bear then took a tumble from the roof, but emerged uninjured. Officials captured the animal. They said they would transport it back to the wild. Authorities said the bear might be the same bear seen Sunday afternoon in a resident's pool. Home video shot by Walderman Strubinski shows the bear taking a stroll through the neighborhood. The bear was almost hit by a car when he decided to cross the road and check out the homes on the other side of the street. He climbed a few fences to check out some neighbors' back yards.

Night at the Fair
Took the family to the annual fair last night. We were in the midway and watching one of those rides that loops you around in a vertical circle and often suspends you upside down. While the ride had the cars at the top, we all heard a "clang, clang" sound that was loud enough to hear over the crowd noise. Then a woman leans down and picks something up. My wife and I thought it was loose change or something else that fell out of a rider's pocket. But what the woman held up was a large 2 inch diameter metal washer. I quickly grabbed the family and we all moved a good distance away from the ride fearing an accident was about to happen. But the ride continued operating and nothing disastrous occurred. We went on to see the other attractions at the fair and had an enjoyable evening. I even got my picture taken with a squirrel monkey sitting on my arm. Now I want a pet monkey. ;)

LOS ANGELES - Two New York teenagers were in police custody Wednesday facing illegal computer access and attempted extortion charges after they allegedly threatened to shake down the popular Web site MySpace.com unless its operators paid them $150,000, prosecutors said.
Shaun Harrison, 18, and Saverio Mondelli, 19, of Suffolk County, N.Y. allegedly hacked into the social networking site and stole personal information from MySpace users. After MySpace booted them from the site, the pair threatened to distribute a foolproof method for stealing information unless MySpace paid them $150,000, said Sandi Gibbons, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County district attorney's office.
Mondelli and Harrison were arrested Friday when they traveled to Los Angeles to allegedly collect the payoff. Instead, they were taken into custody by undercover officers from the multi-agency electronic crimes task force who posed as MySpace employees. Each was charged with two felony counts of illegal computer access and one count of sending a threatening letter for extortion and attempted extortion. They face more than four years in prison if convicted of all charges, prosecutors said. Mondelli and Harrison entered not guilty pleas at their arraignment Tuesday. A Los Angeles Superior Court judge set bail at $35,000 and set a preliminary hearing for June 5.
MySpace.com, owned by News Corp., allows users to post photos, blogs and journals and create networks of friends.

Alligator Alert
FORT WORTH, Texas -- We are under an alligator alert, as game wardens are worried after several sightings around North Texas lakes -- the latest on the north side of Lake Lewisville. Home video shows a gator patrolling, and neighbors say he is in a cove every day now for the past week. While the reptile seems to stay in the water, residents are still concerned. "Relocate them to another lake where there's not as many families and kids. This is a neighborhood and there's a lot of kids swimming in there," Lake Lewisville resident Rita Greenslade said. The Texas Park and Wildlife Department usually leaves alligators alone unless they become aggressive. Game wardens are warning people not to feed the reptiles because it is dangerous and against the law. While alligators have injured 17 people in Texas in the past 15 years, game wardens say they are not normally aggressive.

When in Florida...
SUNRISE, Fla. -- They think they've got the right alligator -- the one that attacked and killed a woman who was out jogging in Florida this week. Wildlife officers on Saturday captured a 9 feet 6 inches long alligator under a bridge where the woman, Yovy Suarez Jimenez, was last seen. A spokeswoman for the state Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said two human arms were found inside the alligator's belly. Authorities still aren't sure how the attack took place. Witnesses had reported seeing a woman dangling her feet over the water's edge Tuesday, but no one saw an attack.

Avoid Extreme G-Forces After a Big Breakfast
So Grammy winning Kelly Clarkson got to take a ride with the Navy's Blue Angels. I would love to have the opportunity to fly in a F/A-18 Hornet. That would be so cool. Way back when I was a kid, the Blue Angels were in town and I had an opportunity to take a flight but I ended up with the flu or something that weekend. I have never seen the Blue Angels in person but if I could get to Fort Worth, Texas this weekend I would make it a priority to see them. I have seen the Air Force's Thunderbirds in action and they put on an outstanding show, but I have always liked the Navy team better. I guess I'll just have to wait for them to come to my area of the world. Anyway, after Kelly's flight, she was proudly waving her air sickness bag in the air as she was disembarking. Still, I envy her for that opportunity.

Camel Spider

The local news had a story about a family discovering a camel spider in their home last night. Ugh! I had no idea that these things can be found in this area. Although they don't get as big as the ones in the Iraqi desert, those can get as big as a dinner plate, ours only grow to about the size of an adult's hand. But they still run fast, can jump, and they make a whistling sound. Although they are not poisonous or dangerous to humans, I still would not want to find one hiding in my closet. Or worse yet, one of them jumping and whistling or chasing me out of my closet!

Desperation : The Movie

Mark your calendars for Tuesday May 23. That's the day when ABC will broadcast the movie Desperation, based upon the Stephen King book. Apparently it started filming in 2004 and completed post production in 2005 but ABC held it for airing during the sweeps. I think the cast is pretty outstanding and I can already picture Ron Perlman as Sheriff Collie Entragian. Steven Weber who also stars in this movie was also in The Shining mini-series as Jack Torrance. Hey, it's even got the kid from E.T. and Annabeth Gish from "The X-Files". The movie was originally planned as a mini-series but ABC decided to make it a one night movie event. I hope they did justice to it because the book was pretty creepy and I have high hopes. But I've got 19 more days to wait it out.

Caught Red-Handed
EL PASO, Texas (AP) -- Border authorities inspecting a car crossing into the United States from Mexico uncovered an ordinary, but banned food item hiding in a strange place. Customs and Border Protection officers and agriculture agents searching a man's car Sunday found 2 pounds of raw pork sausage. The meat was wrapped in foil inside two disposable baby diapers. Bringing in pork is prohibited because the meat can harbor hog cholera. The 27-year-old Colorado man had told the Zaragoza Bridge inspectors he had no fruits, meat or plants to declare. Inspectors also found seven stalks of raw sugar cane, which is banned because it can carry a pest in its peel. Authorities seized the items and the man was fined $250, officials said.

MI 4?
ALLENTOWN, Pa. -- A Pennsylvania animal hospital has been sued by a couple who had brought their dog in to be euthanized but later found out it had been given away. Dana and Gary Ganyer said they had decided to have their 2-year-old German shepherd Annie put to sleep on 2005 because of an ailment that caused frequent and debilitating seizures. But instead, they claimed, the Mill Pond Veterinary Clinic in Milford, Pa., gave her a sedative that made her appear dead and later gave her to a new owner. The lawsuit, which was recently filed in Bucks County, alleges a former clinic employee told them they were considered heartless and that the clinic had devised a plan to "rescue" the dog. Dana Gayner said she's "totally torn up" that a vet could do such a thing. The new owner later had Annie euthanized after she lapsed into a coma-like state.

Mercy

DALLAS -- A 21-year-old is in jail Thursday morning charged in the torture death of the 10-month-old puppy, Mercy, who was stabbed, doused with gasoline and set on fire and died Sunday after several surgeries. DeShawn Brown was arrested shortly after midnight in Corinth, nearly two weeks after Mercy's tortured body was found in a wooded area April 14. Brown is accused of stabbing the 10-month-old pit bull mix, dousing her with gasoline and setting her body on fire. He is accused of animal cruelty, a felony that could carry a sentence of up to 10 years.
Mercy was taken to Carrollton animal shelter Operation Kindness for emergency surgery. Despite numerous emergency surgeries, she died days later. "I think all personnel in this are quite relieved to have a man in custody due to the cruelty of this crime," Sgt. Roger Patterson said. "It's cruel and it's evil, and it takes an evil person to do that ... and there's no reason for them to do that," Rock Creek pet owner Lachelle Duvall said.
There is a public memorial service to remember Mercy this Saturday at 10 a.m. at Operation Kindness. It was originally a private memorial, but so many viewers have asked about a service that the shelter has decided to make it public so everyone could attend.
But we all know he will never get incarcerated for 10 years no matter how heinous the crime was. Mercy was only a dog and no jury in their right mind would assess such a penalty in defense of an animal. I don't necessarily think that is fair but I think it is true.

Tied Up
NEW YORK -- A school bus driver is being charged with using electrical tape and seat belts to tie down a 7-year-old girl he claimed was acting up. Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said Edwidge Jean picked up the girl from school on the afternoon of April 4. During the ride to the girl's home, Jean allegedly used two seat belts to strap her to her seat and tape to tie her crossed wrists. The 52-year-old bus driver said the girl was being unruly. Prosecutors didn't say if anyone else was on the bus or if the girl was hurt. Jean was arraigned Tuesday night and released on his own recognizance. He's charged with unlawful imprisonment, harassment and endangering the welfare of a child. He could face up to a year in jail if convicted.

I call this nickel-and-diming by the dealership. They get you there with these scheduled maintenance hassles and then try to sell you extras to increase their sales numbers. Additives and filters and such have a high profit margin for them, I am guessing. You know, they have never told me that I needed to replace my wipers even though I know I need to get new ones. I went to the parts department and picked up two wiper blades for $8. Must be a low profit margin item.

Yikes!
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Florida's newest problem is a creepy one, and it is roughly the circumference of a telephone pole. It has no toes. It snacks on rabbits. And it's growing in number and in feet: the Burmese python. Florida Everglades National Park biologist Skip Snow said last year they caught 95 pythons. That's not counting the 13-footer that exploded after trying to eat an alligator, or two others that got loose and ate a Siamese cat and a turkey. To keep the problem from sliding further out of control, state Rep. Ralph Poppell wants to add Burmese pythons to Florida's list of regulated reptiles. His bill could force python buyers to complete state training, buy a license and face jail time if they let their snakes loose. Overwhelmed with pets that eat more than they do, python owners decide to release their snakes into the wild. It's so common in the Everglades that there's even a python hot line. And there the Asian natives breed and find a comfortable home in the Everglades' water, heat and vegetation. They have no predators. The bill is being heard in committees on both sides.

But what burns me the most are the people who get to the window and they have nothing ready. They don't know what service they want to use. They don't know if they have to have a return address on their package. They don't know if they should insure their package. The list goes on and on but all these things take up time. And let's say someone chooses to insure their package and they need to fill out a form. Those inDUHviduals get to stand there and fill out whatever needs filling out while the rest of us are waiting patiently. I think they should have to go to the end of the line and wait their turn again. Maybe this is why there are so many signs stating that guns are not allowed on the premises? Heavens forbid if a customer should go "postal".

Tamagotchi
So, being the frugal person that I am, I dug up my old Tamagotchi and gave it to my daughter. The first thing she asked me was where is the antennae for the wireless connection? Wireless connection? Just feed the thing and play with it until it grows up and goes away, I tell her. Even though it is not one of the newer high-tech versions, she really enjoys playing with it. I guess I'll break down and buy her a new one for her birthday. That way, I can play with my old one. ;)
